Emergency Care at Precision Dental Care
The hardest part of a dental emergency is usually the not knowing — whether what you are feeling warrants a visit today, whether the tooth can be saved, whether you should be somewhere else entirely. So the first thing to do is call. We will ask what happened, tell you what to do in the meantime, and find you a chair. Time genuinely matters with some injuries: a tooth that has been knocked out has the best chance of being replanted within the first half hour, and an infection that has started to swell can spread quickly. Describe it to us on the phone and we will tell you how urgent it is rather than leaving you to guess.
What Counts as an Emergency
- Severe or persistent toothache Pain that wakes you, or that painkillers are no longer controlling.
- Swelling of the face or gums Call immediately — infection can spread quickly.
- A broken, cracked or chipped tooth Including a piece that has come away from an old filling.
- A knocked-out tooth Adult or baby. Bring the tooth with you.
- An abscess or infection Often a bad taste, a bump on the gum, or pain on biting.
- Soft tissue injuries To the tongue, cheeks, lips or gums.
- A lost filling, crown or bridge Keep the piece and bring it in.
- Trauma from sport or an accident We will image the area before deciding anything.

The short answer
Emergency dental care is urgent treatment for problems such as severe toothache, swelling, a broken or knocked-out tooth, an abscess or a lost restoration. If you have a dental emergency, call first: we will tell you how urgent it is and what to do in the meantime. A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being replanted within the first half hour.
Emergency Dental Care FAQ
- Should I go to the ER or call a dentist?
- For a dental problem, call us first, and go to the emergency room for life-threatening issues such as significant facial trauma or bleeding you cannot control. When you call, we ask what happened, tell you what to do in the meantime and find you a chair. If bleeding has not stopped after ten minutes of firm pressure with clean gauze, seek immediate care.
- What if I am not sure it is an emergency?
- Call anyway, and we will tell you whether you need to be seen today or whether it can wait. Describe what happened and what you are feeling, so you are not left to guess how urgent it is. Time genuinely matters with some problems, such as a knocked-out tooth or an infection that has started to swell.
- Can a knocked-out tooth be saved?
- A knocked-out tooth can often be saved, but time matters, ideally within about 30 minutes. Keep the tooth moist, in milk or held in your cheek, and come straight in with it. Calling on the way lets us tell you what to do in the meantime.
- My crown or filling fell out. What now?
- Keep the crown or filling, keep it clean and bring it with you, because we can usually re-bond or replace it quickly. A lost filling, crown or bridge counts as an emergency, as does a piece that has come away from an old filling. We assess the tooth first, then use whichever option gets you comfortable today, the restoration itself or a temporary.
- Can you treat a toothache the same day?
- Yes, we can treat a toothache the same day, because we hold time open each day for urgent visits. The priority at that appointment is finding the cause and relieving the pain, before anything else is decided. Fast, low-dose imaging shows what is behind it, and the longer-term options are explained with their cost before you commit to anything.
- What causes sudden tooth pain?
- Sudden tooth pain is usually caused by decay, an abscess, a fracture, or sometimes just something wedged between two teeth. An abscess often brings a bad taste, a bump on the gum or pain on biting as well. Imaging tells us which it is, so treatment starts from the real cause. Until you are seen, rinse with warm water, floss gently either side of the tooth, and do not hold aspirin against the gum.
- Are emergency appointments covered by insurance?
- Most insurance plans cover an emergency exam. We verify your benefits and tell you the cost before treatment, so nothing is decided without you knowing the figure. Financing is also available for urgent treatment.
- What if I do not have insurance?
- Without insurance you can still be seen, and we offer payment plans and financing through CareCredit, Cherry and Proceed Finance. That is so urgent care is not delayed by cost. You do not need to be an existing patient, and the longer-term options are explained with their cost before you commit to anything.
- Do you treat children in an emergency?
- Yes, we treat dental emergencies in patients of all ages, including children. We take extra time with children who are frightened or in pain. If a tooth has been knocked out, adult or baby, bring it with you.
- What if I need a root canal or an extraction?
- We can often carry out a root canal or an extraction the same day. Where that is not possible, we stabilize the tooth so the situation stops getting worse and schedule the treatment quickly. Either way, the pain is assessed and relieved first.
