Cleanings and Exams at Precision Dental Care
Even with excellent brushing and flossing, plaque hardens into tartar in places a toothbrush cannot reach, and once it does no amount of home care will shift it. That is the straightforward reason routine cleanings exist. The exam that goes with it is doing something different and arguably more valuable: it is looking for the problems that have not started hurting yet — the crack under an old filling, the pocket forming between a tooth and the gum, the patch of soft tissue that should be checked. Almost everything we treat is cheaper, quicker and more comfortable to deal with early, and a six-monthly visit is how we find it early. You leave knowing exactly where your oral health stands and what, if anything, needs doing.
Why Regular Visits Matter
- Tartar is removed Hardened plaque is what drives decay and gum disease, and it needs professional tools.
- Small problems are found early Before they become root canals, crowns or extractions.
- Your breath and comfort improve Teeth feel smooth and stay fresher between visits.
- Your general health is protected Oral health is linked to heart disease, diabetes and more.
Most patients do well on a six-month interval. If you have active gum disease or a higher risk of decay, we may suggest every three or four months and explain why.

If gum disease is already present, a routine cleaning is not enough — read about deep cleaning on our periodontal care page, or see the wider preventive picture under preventive dentistry. Cleanings and exams are the backbone of our general dentistry care for the whole family.

The short answer
A dental cleaning removes plaque and the hardened tartar that brushing and flossing cannot shift, then polishes the teeth. The exam that goes with it checks each tooth, the gums and the soft tissue for problems that have not started to hurt yet. Most patients benefit from a cleaning and exam every six months.
Cleanings & Exams FAQ
- How often should I have a cleaning?
- Every six months suits most people, and if you have gum disease or a higher risk of decay we may recommend every three to four months. Plaque hardens into tartar in places a toothbrush cannot reach, and a regular visit is how it is cleared before it drives decay and gum disease. It is also how the exam finds problems while they are still small. If we suggest a shorter interval, we explain why.
- Will the cleaning hurt?
- No, a routine cleaning should not hurt, because we use gentle tools and technique throughout. Ultrasonic scalers do much of the work, which means efficient, comfortable cleaning with less scraping. If your teeth are sensitive, tell us at the start and we will work around it.
- How long does it take?
- A cleaning and exam usually takes about 45 to 60 minutes, depending on how much needs doing. That time covers removing plaque and tartar, polishing, fluoride where it is needed, and checking every tooth, your gums and the soft tissue. Where there is more tartar to clear, the appointment sits toward the longer end.
- Do I really need X-rays every year?
- Not necessarily, because we take X-rays when they are needed rather than routinely. Digital X-rays show what is happening below the surface and between the teeth, where a problem cannot be seen by looking in the mouth. They are fast and low dose, with clear images and results in seconds.
- What is tartar, and why can I not remove it at home?
- Tartar is plaque that has hardened onto the tooth, and once it forms a toothbrush cannot remove it. It builds up in places brushing and flossing cannot reach, even with excellent home care. Removing it needs professional instruments, which is the straightforward reason routine cleanings exist.
- Can a cleaning help with bad breath?
- Yes, a cleaning can make a noticeable difference to bad breath. Removing plaque, tartar and the bacteria they harbor is what does it, and teeth feel smooth and stay fresher between visits. If bad breath persists, tell us, because the exam that goes with the cleaning checks your gums as well as your teeth.
- Will insurance cover my cleaning?
- Most insurance plans cover two cleanings and exams a year. We verify your benefits before the visit, so you know where you stand before you come in. That matches the six-month interval that suits most patients.
- What if I am nervous about coming in?
- If you are nervous, tell the front desk when you book so the team can plan around it. We work at your pace and explain what is happening as we go. Sedation is available if you want it, and an intraoral camera lets you see what we see on the screen beside the chair.
- Do you clean children’s teeth too?
- Yes, we clean children’s teeth as well as adults’. We see infants, children and teens, and the visit is pitched for their age. Cleanings and exams are the backbone of our general dentistry care for the whole family.
- What if I need a deeper cleaning?
- If gum disease is present, we may recommend scaling and root planing, a deeper cleaning below the gumline. A routine cleaning is not enough once gum disease has developed, which is why the exam measures pockets and notes bleeding. We explain what we found and why before anything is scheduled.
