Base pay range $15.64/yr - $22.01/yr
Position Purpose
The Peer Specialist works as a member of the Jail Diversion team provides linkage to mental health treatment and supportive services for adults with severe mental illnesses that are currently participating in the Jail Diversion Program.
Education/Experience
POSITION REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED required. Certified Recovery Peer Specialist preferred but will consider applicants working toward certification, supplemented by knowledge and experience in mental health/substance abuse recovery and must be able to serve as role model of recovery; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licensure / Certification
Maintain current CPR Certification from the American Heart Association. Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Skills / Ability
Knowledge of community resources in order to assist with linkage to mental health treatment, services and other community resources. Ability to follow directions and communicate effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, judiciary, court administration and community agencies. Ability to utilize public transportation. Ability to use computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suites and Share Point. Ability to manage time effectively. Ability to apply excellent organizational skills. Ability to converse in Spanish and/or Creole a plus.
Position Responsibilities (this Is a Non-exempt Position)
Provide support services to program participants and serves as a member of the Jail Diversion Program staff.
Assist program participants with the jail release process.
Accompany program participants to appointments in the community and court using public transportation.
Provides information to program participants, staff and other stakeholders as necessary.
Document interactions with program participants utilizing the Jail Diversion Program Service Point computer system.
Serve as consultant and faculty for Crisis Intervention Team training to law enforcement personnel.
Handle multiple assignments simultaneously, including providing assistance to Jail Diversion staff as necessary.
Complies with required certification for CPR/CPI.
Complies with established facility Policies and Procedures.
Participates in staff meetings; responsible for obtaining information in not in attendance.
Approaches patients/families, and visitors with a respectful, caring manner to convey a sense of concern and warmth.
Maintains confidentiality of patient information and records, staff interrelationships, and communication of sensitive information.
Communicates and problem solves via the chain of command.
Communicates with staff, patients, families, and visitors with courtesy and respect.
Delivers care in a non-judgmental and non-discriminatory manner, sensitive to patient diversity.
Seeks constructive criticism and has the ability to evaluate suggestions objectively
Participates and utilizes opportunities for personal growth and development.
Maintains flexibility and adaptability to expect or unexpected changes in work environment.
Attends in-services and educational training as necessary.
Reports to work as assigned.
Completes daily tasks as assigned.
Promotes a favorable/positive work climate.

Participates in BHCC’s Performance Improvement Activities.
Participates in committee as directed by the BHCC Vice-President and Clinical Coordinator.
Maintains 80% productivity monthly.
Reports to work on time and ready to work with minimal absenteeism.
Adheres to Confidentiality Policies and Procedures / HIPAA Regulations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
