Job Description

Reporting to the Vice President for Research (VPR), the Associate Vice President (AVP) will be responsible for coordinating technology development, entrepreneurship interactions and business incubation programs across the campus, helping Binghamton grow its research market share, and secure and leverage private and public resources - human, capital and funding. Working with staff and other offices within the University at the nexus of research and technology discovery, development, entrepreneurship, and commercialization, the incumbent will over-see, devise and implement initiatives that contribute to major institutional research and economic development goals and successes. Work with both faculty and students to promote entrepreneurship and a culture of tech transfer. Duties Formulate and communicate an aspirational vision and executable goals for maximizing technology commercialization and industrial relations. Design, plan, obtain funding for through grants and contracts, implement and manage programs that enhance the reputation of the campus in technology commercialization, business incubation and economic development impact. Work closely with the Vice President and the senior leadership team of the division of research, prepare and deliver key messages to internal and external stakeholders to support this endeavor and other division initiatives, including benchmarking and best practices analysis. Coordinate special projects as directed by the Vice President, including development and implementation of strategic initiatives, and management of operational programs in entrepreneurship and industry outreach. Build and foster collaborative relationships with Deans, Department Chairs, and individual faculty researchers, and supply and add value to their research related initiatives, outputs and collaborations by tapping business development and investment networks to support research enterprise and start-up activity. Pair faculty interests and expertise with pressing and emerging market needs, including matchmaking with small- and medium-sized businesses applying for SBIR and STTR funding and other technology development supporting grant funding. Engage an academic/research culture in embracing entrepreneurship and innovative cross-disciplinary initiatives, including through training faculty and students in customer discovery and product-market fit. Foster entrepreneurial ventures through start-up formation based upon university and other technologies, including "business-in-a-box" start-up support for business formation, prototyping funding to promising technologies, and seed funding to student ventures. Responsible for the business incubation programs at Binghamton, including the Innovative Technologies Complex Start-Up Suite, which provides low cost space and business support services to early stage spin-off companies, as well as the Koffman Southern Tier Incubator in Downtown Binghamton, which with state-of-the-art facilities has become a nexus for the development of new businesses throughout the Southern Tier. Manage a technology transfer office that develops market ready technologies through innovative programs and initiatives. Negotiate, execute and monitor license, option, material transfer, inter-institutional, and confidentiality agreements for growing research enterprise at Binghamton University. Build and manage a complex and high value patent portfolio. Ensure compliance with federal laws and regulations involving intellectual property rights arising from federally sponsored research and with requirements and obligations in industry contracts Train faculty and students in intellectual property and the entrepreneurial mindset, including through seminars, workshops, networking events, conferences, pitch competitions, business plan competitions, and for-credit coursework in entrepreneurship. Work closely with the SUNY Technology Transfer Directors and Offices and the Research Foundation Innovation and Partnership unit on issues of interest, policies and response to informational and data needs. Collaborate with campuses across the SUNY system on technology transfer, grants and programs, and business incubation. Working with the Associate Vice President for Research Administration and Operations Manager, manage a complex budget for the office with revenues from internal sources as well as from a number of grants and contracts. Working with the Executive Director of STHTI INC, manage the budget of the Koffman Southern Tier Incubator and present to the budget to the STHTI INC board for approval. Provide analysis and due diligence on investable companies and present to the STHTI INC board for investment decision through BingTech Ventures LLC. Oversee and integrate the Binghamton Small Business Development Center for 13 counties in the Southern Tier and the Binghamton Trade Assistance Center for New York, New Jersey and Puerto Rico with the economic development activities of Binghamton University. Manage the Start-Up NY program at Binghamton including the Start-Up Committee that make recommendations on Start-up NY companies and Start-Up NY space to the Vice President and the President. Oversee designation of tax-free Start-Up NY space. Collaborate with Cornell University, IncubatorWorks and other members of the Southern Tier Start-Up Alliance to develop and deliver business incubation support and programs throughout the Southern Tier. Collaborate closely with local economic development organization in delivering economic support economic growth in Greater Binghamton, including serving as Binghamton's representative on various local boards and workgroups. Minimum 10 years' experience in relevant areas such as technology transfer and commercialization, intellectual property management, startup development and venture creation, business development and corporate partnerships. Minimum 5 years' experience in a leadership or executive role, ideally within a research institution or innovation ecosystem.
